DOS

MrHacks:

DOS (or Disk Operating System or Dynamic Operating System) is a shorthand term for several closely related operating systems that dominated the IBM PC compatible market between 1981 and 1995, or until about 2000 if one includes the partially DOS-based Microsoft Windows versions 95, 98, and Millennium Edition.

Since Microsoft Vista, Microsoft has opted to use a new proprietary program called PowerShell, which has been about as warmly accepted by programmers as a wet Q-tip in the ear.

Older programmers and more experienced programmers still like using DOS to write Batch Files (.bat) to execute various scripts in the DOS Prompt.

Launching a DOS Command Prompt
Despite the fact that Microsoft has just about abandoned MS-DOS, it is still there and is as still relevant today as it has been to previous generations of computer geeks.

The fastest way to open up a Command Prompt is to key WINDOW KEY+R, which launches the Run Prompt, then type cmd or cmd.exe.

Commands you should know
|Command
|What it does
|help, man, info
|doskey
|Enhances DOS by allowing arrow keys to be used to scroll through past commands used. Generally enabled, but if not, you may want to type this command. It also allows you to use the tab key to complete entering arguments as well as scroll through them using the tab key.
|Quit cmd.exe
|exit
|mkdir
|Create a directory
|mkdir
|move
|Move one or more files from one directory to another.
|mv
|ren
|Rename a file or files.
|mv
|rmdir
|Remove a directory. (Use with caution!)
|rmdir
|type
|Displays the contents of a text file.
|cat
There are other commands, but the ones listed in the table above are probably the most important to know.

Using DOS to hide files inside images
A simple hack that one can do with DOS is hide files inside of images. For example, suppose you wanted to hide a secret file inside an image. You would want to do the following.
# Compress the file into a .zip either using Windows Explorer or 7-zip. We will refere to the secret file as Secret.zip
# Take an image (preferilby .jpg) and copy or save it to the directory that Secret.zip is in.
# In the DOS Command Prompt, type the following command.
copy /b Image.jpg + Secret.zip Image.jpg

In 7-zip (NOT WINDOWS EXPLORER!), go to the directory that Image.jpg is in, then double click on Image.jpg. Windows Explorer would show you the image, but in the case of Image.jpg, you can see the contents of Secret.zip hidden inside of Image.jpg.

Keep in mind that .zip compression is not the best way to use this hack. Using .tar.gz, .tar.bz2 or .7z would be recommended. Using different compression format, you can hid the same file without overly increasing Image.jpg's file size. YMMV.
How it works
The command you used in step three uses the copy command to copy a binary file (/b) by appending Secret.zip to the end of Image.jpg (Image.jpg + Secret.zip) then save it as Image.jpg.

For example, if you want to write about an article about knitting or woodworking, put you can do so. But if you would like someone to write something about that subject (especially since Wikipedia doesn't allow How-to articles), you can write about it here!
Pages can be a good place to write stuff until a group activity or class activity is considered.
Welcome! This is Arch Reactor, a space in St. Louis for artistic, technical, and educational pursuits.

If you want to read more about us, you'll have to make do with what's already here on the wiki and what you can find in the forums. We're still working on both the space and our website. But one day, all this will be ours! You just wait.

For now, here's some starting materials:
* Arch Reactor Bylaws -- Peace and harmony. These rules help us attain them.
* Member Profiles, by Interests and Skills -- Our member pages list interests and skills to help you find your tutor. Or your student.
* Projects -- This is what we're here for. See what other people are up to, or add your own.
* Meeting Agendas/Minutes -- Official records of our history.
* Space Concepts -- Come here to discuss the space itself, and how we'll put it together.
* Rules and Policies -- Rules and policies for the use of the space and workshop areas.
* 2600 St. Louis --Information on the 2600 Meetings for the St. Louis Area
* :Category:Wishlists -- Various wishlists
* :Category:Stubs -- Articles that could use your help. Try not to touch the stuff that belongs to the admins. ;-)
* :Category:Hacks -- stuff you can do to make things better than they are, well well as some dirty little secrets about them.

You can find everything else by looking at All Pages.
Recruitment Fliers
Feel free to post these wherever you think geeks might see them:
In celebration of their 25 years of publication, 2600 Enterprise's released a tome of magazine articles from the past 25 years in late 2008 and again in 2009 (which was actually there 25th year) called The Best of 2600: A Hacker Odyssey.

Until 2010, the local 2600 meetings that were held in St. Louis were held at the St. Louis Galleria. Because shopping malls have fallen from grace over the past decade, the local meetings suffered dwindling attendance.

On March 5, 2010, the local 2600 meetings found a new home at Arch Reactor.

MrHacks: /* Open Portals */

Stub
Welcome to the Community Portal. This page is used to list all the projects the Arch Reactor group is working on.

Portal Suggestions
Got an idea for a portal? Post it in Portal Wishlist

How Portals Work
Portals are like homepages for certain categories for projects. For example, If you are working on an Arduino project, you can add a link to the page Portal:Arduino and put a short description of what the project does.

When to create a Portal
Portals are generally ideal for Categories that are quite popular. For example, the category :Category:Arduino can have it's own portal page :Portal:Arduino because there are several Arduino projects that are in the :Category:Arduino, however "Bob's Arduino Robot Project" does not have portal page, but since it is relevant to Arduino, and listed in the Arduino category, It may be mentioned on the Arudion Portal Page.

How to create a Portal
* First, you need a category with a significant amount of articles in it.
* Second, the portal page title should start with the prefix Portal: and be included in :Category:Portals.
* Finally, mention some of the projects that are going on within that category on the portal page.

Pretty simple, right?

"Now you are thinking with Portals."--GLaDOS

Stub
Welcome to the Community Portal. This page is used to list all the projects the Arch Reactor group is working on.

Open Portals
This section should be used to list open portal projects.
Portal:2600 - Information, events, and articles related to the St. Louis Chapter of 2600.
