Space concepts
From St. Louis Hackerspace Wiki
Contents |
This page is for discussing the space, what goes into it, how much of it gets devoted to a given purpose, how task X will be achieved in timeframe Y, etc. You get the idea. Our Director of Space and Time is Deech, meaning he's in charge of of the project.
How to Edit This Page Beyond Plain Text
This is, obviously, a wiki, and it therefore uses wiki syntax. You can find a quick formatting reference here, and a manual here.
The four things you'll use most often to ensure easy readability are:
- Message templates. These handy little buggers let you make the pretty blue threaded discussions you see further down the page. To create a new message:
{{MessageStart|name=Alan Turing|verb=exclaims}}A computer
would deserve to be called intelligent if
it could deceive a human into believing
that it was human.{{MessageEnd}}
As you can see, it's pretty simple. Just fill in the blanks. If you omit either or both of the arguments:
{{MessageStart}}
Then the template uses these defaults: "Anonymous Coward" for the name, and "says" for the verb. Usually, you'll be just happy with the default verb, so you would type...
{{MessageStart|name=Aristotle}}
- Numbered lists. To use, prefix each line item with a pound sign (#) and a space. Nest lists by adding extra hashes. Like this:
# Foo # Bar ## Baz ## Qux
- Unordered lists. Like numbered lists, but with an asterisk (*). Unordered lists can also be nested, and nested lists can mix list types:
* Foo ** Bar * Baz *# Qux
- Signatures. If you're a registered user on the wiki, you can insert your username, the current date, or both using tildes:
Three tildes -- Insert username Five tildes -- Insert date Four -- Insert both (Tildes not shown because MediaWIki interprets despite preformatting)
Useful Files
Stick anything that's really...useful here, and isn't specific to some particular part of the project.
- SketchUp Model of the Space (You will need SketchUp to view and edit this. Download for free here.)
Deech's Proclamation
Remember the concepts we're shooting for:
- Functionality. It must be useful for activities.
- Style. We want people who visit to say, "Wow. this looks like an awesome place to be." Creative environments breed creative thinking.
- Comfort. We shouldn't have to sacrifice our backs for a place to hang out. Long hacking sessions require comfortable seating and tables.
These three things are not in order of priority. They are a triangle, all to be balanced with each other.
Projects to Deal With
Wall covering
- Painters Cloth
- We could use magnets, sticky tape, Velcro for holding this up.
- Platicor or Coroplast (whatever they call it), corrugated plastic sheets as building materials.
It's like corrugated cardboard, but made out of translucent plastic. They're light, pretty strong, can be screwed together and as an added bonus look really awesome with light shining behind it. Design/Build groups at my university used it to make lighted room dividers that turned out well on a low budget.
how was it for sound dampening?
I wouldn't put it in a recording studio, but they put them on off-axis angles to the rest of the space (a giant atrium) and it did deaden some of the reverb. I would use it in addition to the canvas panels you're already talking about
How much is it and where can we get it?
- Plywood
- Drywall
- Shelf Brackets and Shelves
- Pegboard
Floor
Sand and Refinish
Objective: Reduce splinters and provide a better seal for easier cleaning
Tasks (please edit this post if you know the answers):
- Schedule period to work the floors ASAP as it will prevent access for a period of (insert time required to sand clean, seal, and cure)
- Sand it down with a floor sander in one session - Chris has experience doing this... (cost is ???)
- Clean up the sanding mess
- Seal it with ??? sealer (cost is ???) in multiple sessions (due to sealer cure requirements and stuff already in the space)
- Block access to areas that are curing (time to cure = ???) via signs or taped off zones, cones, etc..
For scheduling, I think we should do it in two stages, move all the "stuff" to the back half, clean and fix and refinish the front half, then we can open the front half for further work while refinishing the back half.
Does someone have access to a sander?
I was thinking about just moving the couches out into that area around the elevator while we were cleaning, is it going to be a multi-day process?
that I don't know. I think we can clean and do repair at the same time, so maybe not.
I've run a floor sander before, that's the easy part though. around the edges is the hard part. I think we really just need a good once over to take the splinters out and get rid of the grunge. "nice" isn't a target i think we should shoot for. "better" would be good.
Cover Floor(?)
- Low Pile Carpet
- Vinyl or Linoleum
Build a table with the big ass metal door
Needs a sturdy frame built for it.
Build dividing wall for public vs. workshop area
Some framing and Fencing offered by Caz for free.
Build a movable wall instead of permanent one, may have to give up using big pillars.
Maybe build a wall having a 1-2ft zig-zag anyway, self supporting.
Things to do in the Space
- Contact Jimmy
- Ask about painting the wooden pillars
Done - no paint, we can staple stuff to them though
Suggest covering them with fabric or something, easy, cheap and won't look half bad.
Cleaning List
- Sweep
- Move the junk out
- Pull down the plastic on the walls
- Repair soft spot in floor
- Make door more solid and close smoothly
Things to collect for the space
- Fire Extinguishers
Tundra fire extinguishers at CostCo lately. Would those work or would we need the larger ones?
Yes, ABC is required though.
- Carbon Monoxide / Smoke detectors
Stacey can purchase and donate the smoke detectors and provide CO2 detectors.
Three should do it for the space.
Does some of the building have sprinklers?
Any talk on getting a fire alarm system installed instead of smoke detectors?
It's possible, but that would be a reoccurring cost.
- Tall ass ladder (12 ft)
Recommend a multi-position ladder?
there's 3 ladders outside the space right now, one is REALLY tall, I image we can borrow them when the room construction guys aren't using them
- Heaters
Craigslist has kersene heaters for about $40-60 on a constant basis. I have one in my house for emergency use that I just got last month for $35.
- Workbenches (electrical?)
